The curriculum vitae (CV) and resumé are two very different beasts. The following gives the lowdown on how they differ:-
CV
- Used for academic and government research positions
- Consists of a full professional and educational history, plus a full list of publications
- No page limit
- Usually accompanied by a covering letter tailored to the position being applied for
Resumé
- Used mostly to apply for positions outside of academic and government research
- Consists of a summary of your professional experience and skills pertinent to the advertised position
- Usually one or two pages (perhaps more for senior level positions)
- A list of publications is not an absolute requirement, although a short list of particularly relevant publications might be included.
- The resumé is usually specifically tailored to the position being applied for.
